Health care reform has been one of President Obama’s biggest legislative priorities — and most controversial. Critics of the U.S. system have tried to change it for decades, and presidents as far back as Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman have attempted reform without success. After much heated debate and partisan bickering, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act on March 23, 2010, introducing sweeping changes in our the way our care is managed.
On June 28, 2012, the Supreme Court upheld the law, ruling that the much-disputed individual mandate – which requires most Americans to maintain “minimum essential” health insurance coverage or else face a penalty — could be viewed as a tax and is within the government’s power to impose.
