Absentee and Advance Voting
Advance voting is a process that lets you vote without going to the polls on Election Day, and any registered voter can choose to vote this way in Kansas. You can vote in advance by mail, also known as absentee voting, or at your county’s election office. Here’s how it works:
By mail
Complete an application for advance voting.
- Take it or mail it to your election office, which in Douglas County is 1100 Massachusetts St., Lawrence, KS 66044. Applications must be in the election offices by 5 p.m. on Friday before the election, but earlier application is a much better idea.
- You will receive an advance ballot in the mail. The election office begins mailing ballots 20 days before the election.
- Follow the instructions carefully for completing and returning the ballot.
- Mail or deliver your completed ballot, in its sealed envelope with your signature and address, to the election office before 7:00 p.m. on Election Day. You cannot fax in your ballot nor drop it off at a polling place. In Douglas County, there is a County Business Depository drive-by drop-box in the small parking lot on the south side of the Courthouse at 100 Massachusetts. Ballots placed in the drop-box will be collected at 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.
In person
- Go to the county election offices during business hours, any time from 20 days before Election Day until noon on the day before Election Day.
- Complete an application for advance voting. The office will have forms available or you can complete the application in advance. You will need a valid photo identification.
- Receive your ballot and vote.
- Turn in your completed ballot as instructed by elections staff.
